The '60s was an exciting time in Australia. And things were very different from today. Consider these things:
Popular Culture. The Beatles, the Woodstock Festival was "An Aquarian Exposition" of 3 Days of peace & music. The peace movement, drugs and free love. World Politics. The "Cold War" followed World War 2, the Malaysian Crisis and the Korean War. The Berlin Wall divided East and West Germany, the Cuban Missile Crisis nearly plunged the world into all out nuclear war. Vietnam War. The Vietnam war was escalating, conscription was introduced and there were increasingly large demonstrations against the war. Fashions. Conservative Melbourne was horrified when Jean Shrimpton wore a mini-skirt but no hat, gloves or stockings in the Members' Enclosure at the 1965 Melbourne Cup. No stockings! Technology. American technology was making great strides in military and civilian worlds. Cars were becoming more stylish and powerful. Solid state electronics were becoming commonplace. But ... Black and White TV, no mobile phones or tablets, no personal computers, no internet, no web, no emails, no social media. Space. Russia had launched the first artificial earth satellite, Sputnik 1 in the previous decade (4 October 1957), followed by the humiliating failure of the Vanguard launch. John Kennedy, the US President, had set the US the goal of placing a man on the moon by the end of the decade. This all happened nearly 50 years ago and some of our memories have dimmed a little and there are even some instances where we disagree. Shocking! |
